Description
Bay Ridge was given its name because of its proximity to New York Bay and excellent views from Ridge Boulevard. These views attracted the wealthy to build extravagant million dollar summer homes along Shore road overlooking the water. Many Manhattan workers looking for quieter surroundings also populate the neighborhood. Bay Ridge is famous as the set for the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. A few famous personalities hail from Bay Ridge, including actor and current "The Sopranos" regular, Dan Grimaldi.
Bay Ridge residents enjoy a diversity of dining establishments, such as those lining 3rd Avenue, given the local nickname of "Restaurant Row." There is also a thriving bar scene, with residents frequenting the Irish pubs abounding along 3rd, 4th, and 5th Avenues, the main commercial strips of the neighborhood.
